While it is important to recognize that ears come in all shapes and sizes, there are situations when protruding ears can become a source of embarrassment that affects self confidence. Otoplasty is the most common and effective long term solution for protruding ears.
Dr. Bryan Ambro is a double certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience in reconstructive procedures. This is especially important for procedures like otoplasty that can dramatically affect appearance- Dr. Ambro has the artful skill, experience and surgical knowledge to provide aesthetically pleasing results.
Protruding or prominent ears are often noticeable soon after birth, but Dr. Ambro recommends that surgery be performed later in childhood when the ears are fully formed. It is beneficial to perform otoplasty while a child is still young due to the fact that ear cartilage is more pliable when we are young, making surgery easier and results more natural looking.
Childhood is also the time that someone with protruding ears is likely to suffer with embarrassment and confidence issues as other kids can be quick to poke fun and draw attention to their appearance.
Otoplasty, also known as “ear pinning”, is performed as an outpatient procedure in the comfort of our surgical suite at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Prior to the procedure, Dr. Ambro will go over the entire process and ensure that you, or your young patient, feel confident, comfortable and understand what to expect. After the procedure dressings will be worn for several days to cover the sutures and any activity restrictions will also be explained ahead of time.
Dr. Ambro also performs otoplasty on adults, including those who may have had an earlier surgery with poor results. If you have concerns about protruding ears, come in for a consultation with Dr. Ambro and discuss your options. Dr. Ambro will make the appropriate recommendations for your health, cosmetic goals and personal budget.
