Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the ears. It is commonly performed on children to correct protruding ears. Otoplasty can also be performed on adults who did not have the surgery when they were a child or to revise the results of a previous otoplasty.

When is the Best Time To Have Otoplasty?

Surgeon Dr. Bryan Ambro recommends that otoplasty be performed after the ears are fully developed but while the child is still young. Generally by first grade is the best time. There are two reasons for having ear surgery at a young age:

  • First, the ear cartilage is very pliable in children and can be more easily molded and reshaped.
  • Second, having the procedure done at a young age can prevent the embarrassment that children with malformed ears often experience.

Otoplasty – What To Expect

Otoplasty is sometimes referred to as ear pinning. It is an outpatient procedure performed by Dr. Bryan Ambro in our facial plastic surgery center at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland.

Dr. Ambro will make an incision behind the ear, usually in the natural fold where the ear connects to the head. Next, he will trim and reshape the cartilage for a more desirable shape.

The cartilage is then pinned back and secured with sutures (stitches). A dressing is worn for several days following the procedure to aid in the healing process.

Are there any non-surgical alternatives to Otoplasty?

Unfortunately, to date, there are no effective non-surgical solutions for protruding ears. There are several products on the market that offer a temporary benefit. However, long-term adhesives prove to be inconsistent and can cause skin irritation.

How much does Otoplasty cost?

The cost of ear surgery varies widely from one patient to another. Dr. Ambro offers consultations for you to come in, meet the doctor and explore the various treatment options available. During that appointment, Dr. Ambro will discuss the cost and any financing options that may be available.

Annapolis Plastic Surgery works with CareCredit as a provider of no-interest financing solutions for cosmetic surgery procedures.

Is Otoplasty covered by insurance?

Otoplasty is generally considered to be a cosmetic procedure, and therefore, not covered by insurance. Otoplasty is sometimes performed for patients with ear deformities, such as microtia (incomplete development of the outer ear). In these cases, insurance may cover some or all of the cost of the procedure. Depending on the specifics of your treatment, we will discuss insurance if it is an option.
