3 Common Myths About Lip Injections

When people hear the words “lip injections”, often times their thoughts can immediately jump to the bad over-the-top lip jobs they saw on reality TV. This stigma can even follow non-invasive procedures, such as temporary injectables and fillers. Lip injections are becoming increasingly more popular, so it’s important for patients to be able to separate fact from fiction before moving forward. Because of this, we’ve gathered some of the most common myths and perceptions and either confirmed or debunked them. If you’ve been interested in lip enhancement but have hesitated because of what you’ve heard (or seen), this article may be just what you need to make a final decision.

Myth #1: If I don’t like the results, there’s nothing I can do to fix it.

Injectable lip enhancement will generally not have permanent results. It is true that some fillers (such as poly-l-lactic acid) take a year or two to break down and are usually advised for individuals that have received injections previously. However, if you use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, which are the most commonly used products at Annapolis Plastic Surgery, an eraser enzyme called hyaluronidase can be injected to dissolve the filler if you decide you don’t like the way it turned out.

Myth #2: Lip injections don’t last long; I’ll have to get them refilled all the time.

You do have to get your lips touched up if you plan on maintaining your look, but not as often as you’d think. Fillers used for lip injections can actually last up to a year or more. With touch-up injections every 6 to 9 months, you can keep up the appearance of your enhanced lips.

Myth #3: You can always tell when someone has had fillers because they never look natural.

When lip enhancements do not look natural, the problem sometimes lies with the technique, not the product. This means – do your research and make sure the doctor you’re seeing is an experienced plastic surgeon who knows what they’re doing. In doing so, you’ll end up with some subtle changes that will make a big difference, while still appearing natural. When performed by a trained, skilled, and credentialed professional, who also has an eye for aesthetics, the results can be beautiful.
