We asked you, the patients of Annapolis Plastic Surgery, to submit your questions regarding hair removal. Here’s what we got!

FAQs

1. How does it work?

Forever Bare BBL sends pulses of light to target the pigment within the hair shaft while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. This thermal injury created by the pulsed light causes the follicle to stop growing hair.

A typical treatment starts with the practitioner cleaning your skin. Then a clear gel is applied to the treatment area in order to focus the light energy and cool the top skin layer. A sapphire crystal is then placed upon the skin and the provider pulses the light targeting the hair follicles.

2. Is it for any skin tone?

BBL Hair Reduction is a customized treatment for most skin types however since this technology searches for pigment it may not be recommended for darker skin types (Fitz V) and patients with recent sun exposure/tanned skin.

Unfortunately, this treatment is also not recommended for blonde or white hair.

3. What areas can be treated?

The most common treatment areas include:

  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Cheeks
  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Neck

4. How long does it take?

Depending on the size of the area we are treating- treatment times are generally 10-40 minutes.

5. How many treatments will I need?

Typically, 5-6 treatments will significantly reduce hair in the treated area. However, the exact number will depend on the color, coarseness, and density of the hair. Once or twice yearly maintenance treatments are generally recommended to eliminate hair regrowth in the treated areas. For hair reduction of the face, treatments are ideally spaced 4 weeks apart. For treatment areas off the face, these appointments should be scheduled every 4-6 weeks. A consultation will help guide you to set realistic expectations and a treatment plan specifically for you.

6. What does it feel like?

Most patients say BBL Hair hair removal is less painful than other types of hair removal including waxing and electrolysis. With Scitons integrated cooling and custom treatment settings, most patients do not require topical anesthesia however topical numbing cream is available to help reduce any discomfort related to the treatment. The sensation is described as a snapping sensation with a little warmth.

7. Are there side effects?

You might notice some temporary side effects after having BBL hair removal. These include:

  • Peri-follicular Edema (PFE) – Slight swelling and redness around the hair follicles
  • Redness of the skin
  • Warmth of the treated skin
  • Hives

8. What can I expect after getting laser hair removal?

Despite having some minor and temporary side effects like the ones listed above, you can return to your day-to-day routine. BBL hair removal requires no downtime, and you can go about your day as you normally would.

We typically advise against exercising the same day as this may increase your risk for side effects such as swelling or hives.

9. What do I need to do to prepare for an appointment?

In preparation for your appointment, it is important to not be tanned or have had any significant recent sun exposure to the treatment areas. This includes no self-tanner! You should also come with the treatment areas clean shaved. It is important that we target the hair shaft in the follicle not the hair above the skin. Do not wax or pluck before or in between your treatments.

10. How long will the results last?

After receiving your series of treatments (four to eight sessions), you can expect your results to last for years. While you may have to come into the office for occasional maintenance treatment, laser hair removal is a great option for those who are wanting long-term results.

Here at Annapolis Plastic Surgery, our team of professionals is trained to deliver you the best and safest experience possible. Our practice is founded on making sure our clients feel secure in the treatments they choose and confident in the results they get. Call us today to see how we can help!
